Panopto is Smith’s streaming media service used to host and share both class Zoom recordings and other non-Zoom videos. Panopto is integrated with Moodle, making it easy to share materials with your class. Additionally, you can use Panopto without Moodle to share your videos with students. You’ll find detailed instructions for each scenario below.
This method utilizes the Panopto block in Moodle to post Zoom recordings automatically to your Moodle course page. Zoom recordings appear visible to students as soon as they have finished processing.
This method utilizes the + Add Resource feature in Moodle, allowing you to post individual videos as resources for specific topics as you see fit—the videos will not be shared automatically. You will connect your course to Panopto via the Panopto block in Moodle, then remove the block to return posting control to you.
Your Zoom class recordings will still be stored in Panopto and can be shared using other supported tools, such as Google Drive and Slack.
Panopto will automatically generate captions for videos that have been recorded in the Panopto recorder, as well as any video files that are uploaded without captions. However, these captions must be enabled before they will be visible to viewers. Because these captions are automatically generated, they will not be 100% accurate and will require editing.
In Panopto, select Browse. Select the My Folders tab to display folders associated with your Moodle courses. Navigating into these folders will display videos uploaded or recorded to those folders.
To begin captioning your video, locate the video from the appropriate folder. Hover your cursor over the video you wish to caption and select Edit.
Select Captions from the editing menu in the top left corner. Select the Import Captions dropdown menu and then select Import Automatic Captions.
The automatic captions will not be 100% accurate, so you will need to edit them. Select any block of text to begin editing those captions.
When you are done editing captions, select Apply in the upper right menu.
Panopto will inform you that the changes have been applied, and ask you to close the editor. Select OK to close the editor and view the video, or select Cancel if you wish to continue working in the editor.
